AL.Berlin & Festsaal Kreuzberg Presents: AL.Karneval 2023

Following the incredible success of AL.FESTIVAL.2022 last October, Festsaal Kruezberg join forces with AL.Berlin on the Karneval Der Kulturen 2023 Friday 26th of May to introduce you with an incredible line up of West Asian & North African Dance, HipHop and Contemporary Pop Music in a One Long Night, spread over all of Festsaal Kreuzberg multiple stages! Including multiple album releases, shows played for the first time in Berlin!

Ministry of Dub-Key (New Music Release Party)

Established in 2009, DJ/Producer Bruno Cruz (From DAM Palestine) and Performer/MC Walaa Sbait (From 47Soul) brought their homegrown Dabke Dance and Mijwiz sounds to match with the beats of hip-hop, dancehall and dembow, announcing with it the emergence of their unique Arab-A-Dub style; sound system culture meets a late night Palestinian street party - and not a beat is amiss.

JAMILA & THE OTHER HEROES (Album Release Party)

JAMILA & THE OTHER HEROES is a Berlin based band from manywhere playing Psychedelic Desert Funk to make you fly.

Leading the band is the vibrant Jamila Al- Yousef. Born in Berlin on the day the wall came down, and raised by her influential Palestinian refugee father, Jamila composes music with her Heroes to connect with transcultural audiences who can identify with the bands' diaspora narratives and their musical fight against racism.Jamila's emancipatory message in Arabic and English is supported by powerful live musicians. Let yourself be carried away by an incomparable sound of psychedelic guitar riffs (Leon Sanchez) , vibrating on a warm and earthy fundament of wavy bass runs (Felix ‚Fema’ Barth), Arab percussion sounds (Salam Alhassan) and Afrobeat, Hip Hop und Rock influenced drum beats (Pier Ciaccio).

The dance floor JAMILA & THE OTHER HEROES create is a breeding ground for people to meet and practice togetherness - the musicians’ response to the exclusion mechanisms of our time.

TootArd (Album Release Party)

TootArd (Arabic for Strawberries) is a “quarter-tone pop” band from the majestic mountainside village of Majdal Shams in the Occupied Syrian Golan Heights. This inventive duo of brothers – Hasan and Rami Nakhleh – return with an infectious re-imagining of their sound. Jammed full of pop hooks and quarter-tone melodic lines, “Migrant Birds” unleashes a disco whirlwind that pays homage to the Middle Eastern dancefloor scenes of the 80’s. Retro funky meets hi-sheen contemporary.

Saliah (DJ Set)

Saliah (pronounced SA-LEE-YA) is a British-Lebanese music producer and DJ blending SWANA sounds and UK Bass. Saliah made her debut appearance at Glastonbury 2022 and has recently been named one of Virtuoso’s ‘Ones to watch’.

Milad Khawam (Live Show)

Milad Khawam is a trumpet player, producer and composer in Berlin. He studied classical and Arabic music at the Damascus Opera House and has played solo trumpet with many orchestras in Europe and the Middle East since 2010. His compositions have been performed at festivals such as XJAZZ! Berlin 2018 and Fusion 2018.

Edna Martinez (DJ Set)

Dj / Curator and artist from the Colombian Caribbean based between Berlin and Cartagena de Indias. Her musical selection is linked to her research in which she explores autobiographical routes with the concept of resistance as its axis. kicking down borders, throwing down rhythms her sound involves Afro-Caribbean rhythms, jazz bases, tribal polyrhythm, Arabic and more.

Tamer Nafar (Solo Live Show)

Tamer Nafar is a legendary figure among the WANA Region Hiphop Scene. He is a Palestinian rapper, actor, screenwriter and social activist and the leader and a founding member of DAM, the first Palestinian hip hop group.

In 2000, Tamer formed the first Palestinian hip-hop group DAM, along with his brother Suhell Nafar and friend Mahmood Jrere. One of their first singles, “Min Irhabi” (Who's the Terrorist), was downloaded over a million times, making DAM a household name among youth throughout the Middle East. Rolling Stone in France distributed the song within one of their issues, and the track has been featured on various compilations. The French paper Le Monde called DAM “the spokesman of a new generation”.

Yunis (Live Show)

The Egyptian musician YUNIS relies on traditional wedding music and Mawlid festivities, reinterpreting them via a blend of Ney music and synthesizers. Yunis is a producer and co-founder of Kafr El-Dauwar Records. In his music, YUNIS seeks inspirations from the popular Egyptian folkloric heritage, which boasts many instruments, tools, and musical styles. He then reads and analyzes the musical legacy and presents it with the forms of his contemporary time. This is clearly shown in his first solo album, “The Blue Djinn dance", which was released on 15 November via Kafr El-Dauwar Records.

Hiba Salameh (DJ Set)

Born and raised in Haifa, DJ and Filmmaker Hiba Salameh became a household name in the WANA Region Based Party Scene all around Europe during the past couple of years. Known for her versatile DJ style that uniquely spans the smooth mixes of Techno electro to cheesy sleazy 90’s Egyptian pop, Hiba managed to put her stamp on what a WANA Dance Party can mean!
